Summer Done Simple
Nearby family fun activities for cheap!
While many families have had to cancel their regular summer plans, fortunately,
living in DFW you don’t have to go far to have a good time. So whether you’re
stuck at home or just want to stick close to home this summer, here are a few
family fun ideas all within an hour of the Metroplex.
Kids (and adults) will be in awe as they watch various aircraft take-off and land at
one of the busiest airports in the nation. Picnic tables, telescopes, and
convenient parking are available.
Know a kid who is loco for locomotives? Take a ride on either the DART Rail or
TEXrail. Take a trip to Fort Worth or Dallas and you’ll enjoy not having to battle
highway traffic.
Public Art
Not all art is found in a museum. Both Dallas and Fort Worth have a large public
art initiative that’s open year-round. The best part about viewing sculpture and art
open to the public is that little hands are allowed to touch and interact with the
art.
If you’ve got a dinosaur lover in the family, Glen Rose is a must-see. Just a short
hour away, Glen Rose is the Dinosaur Capital of Texas. View genuine dinosaur
tracks or get up close and personal with some real-life animals.
Take a hike!
From rugged to relaxing there are hundreds of trails across DFW. Put on some
walking shoes and start exploring. Take photos of seasonal blooms or check out
a bird guide from the library and see who can spot a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher
first.
Life’s a highway
When was the last time the whole family just hopped in the car and drove?
Sometimes the journey is as much fun as the destination. Keep the kids busy
with games like: Bingo, I Spy, and the License Plate game. Pack some snacks,
leave the DVDs at home, and enjoy some good old fashioned family time as you
use a real map (not GPS) to plot out your next course. Eat at a local diner and
have a family sing-along on the return trip.
